Why Star Wars is worth $4 Billion

Disney has spent $15.5 billion over the last decade to buy Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Entertainment and Lucasfilm (the original creators of “Star Wars”). $4 billion of that was just for Star Wars.

The financial motives behind this are clear. First, film ticket sales will garner immediate cash flow (It has already fetched $50 million in advance ticket sales). Wall Street analysts predict that “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will make between $1.5 billion and $2 billion worldwide, and Disney will also release a new Star Wars movie approximately every year for the next 4 years.

Behind the movie scenes, Disney is also an established master at product licensing. As evidences from 3rd party licensing agreements ranging from one of this holiday season’s most popular toy, the BB-8 smartphone-controlled droid by Sphero to LEGO sets to T-shirts (and even ice-cream from Brooklyn-based Ample Hills Creamery?!), it is clear that royalty opportunities from slapping a Star Wars character on consumer goods are copious. Some experts project an additional $5 billion in Force Awakens toys in the year surrounding the film release. That’s right, 2-3 times as much money will potentially come from product licensing than from ticket sales, and that’s just in the first year after release. For reference, Star Wars: Episode 4 – A New Hope (the first film to be released in 1977) made just over $775 million in ticket revenue, while total Star Wars franchise revenue including licensing, merchandise, books sales etc. is over $28 billion. Billion with a “b”.

According to Forbes , Disney’s 11 existing parks around the world contributed almost a third of its $45 billion revenue and 20.7% of its $10.7 billion operating profit in 2013.

Prior to the acquisition of Lucasfilm, “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” produced by Marvel, and Pixar’s “Inside Out” were the main profit drivers of Disney’s operating income of $1 billion.

Both of these Disney properties have strong licensing as well, including (but not limited to):
